1Introduction
This report is based on an analysis of 77 posts shared on social media platforms in Myanmar during May 2025. It examines patterns of hate speech and fake news, focusing on the targeted ethnic and religious groups, the methods of propaganda dissemination, and the role of media platforms. The aim of this research is to uncover how such content contributes to social division, conflict, and the incitement of violence within the community.
The spread of hate speech and fake news through social media and other communication channels within Myanmar has the potential to exacerbate ethnic, religious, and political tensions, leading to a rise in social polarization and conflict across communities.
2Research Methodology
(a) Data Collection
- Sources of Information: 77 posts obtained from Telegram, Facebook, and TikTok.
- Time Period: From May 1 to May 31, 2025.
Categorization
- Hate Speech (68 posts): Words that incite racial or religious hatred, threats.
- Fake News (9 posts): Fabricated videos, misrepresentation of information.
(b) Data Analysis Method
Qualitative Analysis: Classification by topic (target, focus group, type).
Quantitative Analysis: Number and reach (Likes, Shares, Views) of hate speech/fake news across different media platforms.
Case Studies: In-depth analysis of 7 posts with significant social impact.
(c) Monitoring System
This report was compiled by monitoring online and print media used by the junta and its supporters to disseminate hate speech. Specifically, in May 2025, BHRN monitored 3 Facebook groups and 13 Facebook accounts, identifying 25 instances of hate speech. On Telegram, 40 instances of hate speech were found across 24 channels. Monitoring of 24 TikTok accounts revealed 12 instances of hate speech. In terms of print media, 2 newspapers and 1 journal were monitored.
During the month of May, a total of 77 instances of hate speech and fake news were documented. The results will be presented using charts, graphs, and clear explanations. The main causes of hate speech, its impacts, and recommendations for prevention will also be provided.
Due to limitations in conducting comprehensive monitoring across all social media platforms, some instances of hate speech may not have been recorded.
Context of misinformation as hate speech
In this report, BHRN has analysed hate speech in the context of the ongoing political tensions in Myanmar. Sometimes, when measured by international standards, what might look like misinformation takes on a different significance in the aftermath of the 2021 coup. This is because misinformation, particularly when aimed at individuals, groups with opposing political beliefs, or minority religious communities, can have severe consequences, even leading to loss of life and the intensification of religious and community conflicts.
Hate speech in Myanmar's current political climate is more than just false information; it can be a catalyst for very real and harmful outcomes, especially in the post-coup environment. Understanding this complex relationship between hate speech, misinformation, and their tangible impacts is crucial for grasping the region's broader social, political, and intergroup dynamics.

7Conclusion
IIn Myanmar, a review of hate speech and misinformation dissemination during the month of May reveals an increase in hate speech directed toward Muslims and Rohingya, especially in relation to the India-Pakistan conflict, compared to previous months. Furthermore, there was a noticeable rise in hate speech based on religious affiliation, with social hostility encouraging violence against a particular ethnic or religious group.
Hate speech targeting the Rohingya has expanded beyond Rakhine communities and has begun spreading to central parts of the country this month. While such rhetoric had previously been prevalent in Rakhine areas under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), urging the expulsion of Rohingya, this trend is now spreading more broadly.
Hate speech in May was rooted not only in religious and racial divisions but also in political motivations. The language used often included dehumanizing terms, mocking or sarcastic expressions, and rhetoric that promoted or encouraged violence.

In Muslim countries, being a Muslim woman is often experienced like being struck by lightning. If you belong to another religion or ethnicity, the situation is even worse. In Pakistan, women are mainly controlled and treated by men. When it comes to gender equality, Pakistan ranks 145th out of 146 countries.

The goal of terrorist Muslims is to marry many women and have many children so that the number of violent Muslims will grow. They plan to carry out jihad against non-Muslims and eventually take control of the world through violence. This is their vision.

I was the first to criticize AA’s wrong actions. I don’t support injustice, no matter who commits it. However, groups like ARSA and RSO, who claim to be Rohingya, are even worse than AA. These groups are extremely dangerous and corrupt. They operate secretly and act like criminal gangs. Behind them are countless people who claim to be Rohingya. That’s why I choose to ignore these so-called Rohingya groups - they are extremely despicable. For the sake of national security, I’ve decided to stay silent about AA. National security doesn’t just mean protecting Rakhine State alone - it means protecting the sovereignty and borders of the whole country of Myanmar. These people want to break apart Myanmar. So, whether we like each other or not, it is okay. But we must pay special attention to protecting our country’s borders - especially you, the Chin communities. It’s important not to take the wrong side. If you ever face injustice, we will stand with you without hesitation. That’s not just talk - I’ve already proven it through my actions. As for those people, fight them. If you’re fooled by them, you’ll be the ones who suffer. They are extremely low and despicable.

India was very clear in its response. When they found illegal Bengali migrants, those using fake names and pretending to be Rohingya, they arrested all of them across the country. When asked whether they would send them back to Bangladesh, they didn’t give an answer. Instead, they loaded them onto a boat and dropped them off in the Andaman Sea. The message was simple: go wherever you want, but don’t come back to India. They didn’t care about human rights or anything else.

Proverbs like “breaking the stick that supports you” or “sleeping on someone’s skin and eating from it” seem to perfectly describe the illegal Bengali migrants in Rakhine. These people, who crossed over because they had no place to stay, nothing to eat, and no support, were welcomed with kindness, fed, given shelter, and allowed to stay. But instead of being grateful, these illegal Bengalis are now trying to drive out the local people from their own land and take it over by any means. The concept of gratitude doesn't exist in their Quran.
Osama Ibrahim: If they want to live peacefully, they should just live quietly. Living together could work well. But if extremist groups like the AA act up, they’ll be expelled from Arakan land.

The PDF terrorists formed a group and brutally raped and murdered a traitorous girl named Thitar Lwin from Kalaw’s Basic Education High School, who had joined the PDF after betraying the country. These PDF extremists, calling her “Dalan,” committed this horrific crime. She had joined the PDF influenced by the propaganda spread by the NUG terrorist group and its wanted fugitives. Such female traitors who betray the nation often end up without support and face tragic fates like this. Many of them have also ended up being exploited as bar girls, massage parlor workers, or sex workers in KTVs and similar places.

Women in the PDF are mostly obsessed with men. They are eager to have sex and enjoy being surrounded by lots of men. That’s why they joined the PDF - to live freely in the jungle and have sexual freedom. They like moving from one man to another. For PDF women, sex is nothing unusual - it’s as normal as eating and drinking. These problems happened because PDF men, who had little experience and got attached to them, became jealous and caused conflict.
